The Preservation Cooperative Ltd. was established in 1984 and incorperated in 1992. It is a full service general contracting and preservation consulting firm utilizing a comprehensive approach to the conservation and preservation of historic structures.

 

Mr. Robert Major, "President" has over 37 years experience in the field of historic preservation,including over 11 years in the field as a restoration carpenter, with the balance of time spent as a business owner of The Preservation Cooperative Ltd. Mr. Major holds a BS degress in Historic Preservation and a BA degree in History and Education. He was a member of the Bristol Historic District Commission from 1991 through 2004, serving as chair for 6 years.

 

The Preservation Cooperative Ltd. was the recipient of a National Preservation Award from the National Trust for Historic Preservationin 1998 for the restoration of Smith's Castle, a 17th century house museum. Other projects recieving historic preservation awards are: the restoration of the Wanton-Lyman-Hazard house, c.1699, in Newport, RI, and the Little Compton Historical Society archival storage facility barn. In 2000, Preservation Coop. was the project manager for the Bob Vila's Home Again thirteen-week series on the Elmwood Historic District in Providence, Rhode Island. Mr. Major has lectured extensively on preservation topics including building construction techniques utilized in historic structures.
